Updating video card drivers
In order for your PC to work well, you need to correctly select software for it, briefly called drivers, for almost all of its components: motherboard, graphics adapter, controller. When the laptop or computer is new, that is, it has a disk with the necessary drivers, there should be no problems. But if a lot of time has passed since the purchase, and the computer requires reinstalling the drivers, then you will have to look for them on the Internet.
Selecting drivers for a graphics adapter
Video cards are different, and each of them requires specific drivers. Our guide will help you break down the entire process step by step. So let's get started.
Step 1: Selecting the right video card
Finding out the model of the video card that is on your computer is quite simple: for example, using special utilities. There are many of these, and they all have varying degrees of “complexity” - most often specifically for beginners.
The most famous program in this and other areas can be called GPU-Z. She will be able to sort out all the data related to the graphics adapter: including what software is currently installed.
- First of all, download and install the GPU-Z utility. When the application opens, you will see a window with the characteristics of the graphics adapter.
- In the "Name" the model is shown in the field "Driver Version" - version of the driver used.
When you determine the model of your video adapter.
Step 2: Download drivers for the video card
Finding drivers for well-known brands of video cards is quite simple.
Intel
- So, first of all, go to the official website, and then type in the search bar "Searching for downloadable material" and click on the search icon.
- Then you will have the opportunity to add specifics to your request: indicate the current firmware, select "Driver" For search. Click on the software found and in the window that opens, where the driver available for download will appear, select "Download".
AMD
- If your video card belongs to the AMD brand, then, therefore, go to their manufacturer’s website and fill out the search form on it.
- Then click on "Show result" and wait for the next page to load - your driver is on it, and you should only download it.
nVidia
If you are the owner of a computer that runs on a graphics adapter "nVidia", then you will again have to download the official website, fill out the search form, click on search and download the driver from the window that opens.
However, you don’t have to look for drivers on the manufacturer’s website; you can simply update them directly from Windows. Follow this algorithm:
- Having opened "Device Manager", select item "Video adapters": select the model of your video card by right-clicking on it.
- In the pop-up menu you need to select "Update drivers" and wait until the system finds an update for your graphics adapter through automatic search.
If you are the owner of a laptop, you need to go to the manufacturer's website and install drivers from there. This can be explained by the fact that the manufacturer adjusts the parameters of each video card to a specific laptop model, and therefore its software will be somewhat different from the standard video card.
Step 3: Reinstall drivers
- If you downloaded the module in the EXE extension, then enable it; if it was downloaded as an archive, unpack it and run the utility again. But if none of the above options suits you, then you have downloaded a file that can be opened using "Device Manager".
- When you install drivers manually, do not forget to specify the path to the loaded module.
Next steps are the same for all video cards: restart your computer (if your attempt to update was unsuccessful, use the service "Systemic recovery". Update your drivers regularly and your computer will serve you for a long time!
