Printer, MFP shows printing error after Windows 10 update?
Although Microsoft has improved its position in this regard, the truth is that it is still not uncommon to experience problems with your computer after a major system update. This is something that is becoming less and less common, but it certainly can happen to us. This is exactly what happened to our printer after upgrading our computer to Windows 10.
However, you should never rule out the possibility that the malfunction may be caused by another cause. Either way, we'll tell you what checks you should run before assuming an update is to blame. So, if you find yourself in this situation, here are the steps to follow and recommendations to try to resolve any of these issues.
Check your printer or MFP to ensure it is printing
Regardless of the problems that we may encounter with our printer after upgrading our computer to Windows 10, the truth is that we must first perform a series of basic checks to ensure that it is not an update problem, but a glitch that is preventing us from printing any document caused by another reason. Therefore, here are the steps to follow to try to get the printer to work properly again:
Unplug and restart the printer
This is perhaps the first thing many users think of when they have problems with their printer or even their PC. In this case, turning the printer off and on again may help resolve the problem. However, if doing this from the switch on the printer is not enough, it is best to also unplug it for a few seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on again.
This is the best way to deactivate all the processes, services and features of the device and reactivate them from scratch. In fact, the reboot feature for troubleshooting new technologies is the most recommended first option.
Check your connection
If the printer still does not work and is wired, it is recommended that you check all connections. The USB cable may not be connected correctly or may not be recognized. If it's a physical problem, we can fix it by simply connecting all the cables correctly, but if everything is connected correctly, the cause of the error could be a problem with the port being used.
So we can try connecting it to a different port and check if the problem is resolved. It is generally a good idea to also check the connection cable in another device to rule out that the cable is causing the problem. However, if our printer is wireless, then a different type of test needs to be done:
- Make sure the wireless connection is activated: Most printers have a button that indicates whether the wireless connection is activated or not. Therefore, you should check its condition and, if necessary, refer to the operating instructions to find out how to activate this option. Trying to connect to the printer wirelessly from a smartphone or tablet will eliminate problems with WiFi connection computer.
- Perform a connection test: Most printers also have an option in the settings menu to perform a connection test. Check the manual or perform a test to verify the connection.
- Check the connection to the PC: If the printer is connected correctly, you should check the connection to the computer. It is important that the PC is properly connected to the same network as the printer. Another way to check your computer's wireless connections is to connect your smartphone via WiFi to your computer.
- Check bluetooth connection: If the connection is via Bluetooth, it is best to run the Bluetooth troubleshooter to check if there is a problem and the system can fix it automatically. You can bypass the Bluetooth port on your computer by connecting your smartphone to the printer via Bluetooth.
- Test your printer from your smartphone: If you don't have any of the printer manufacturer's apps installed to quickly print documents from your smartphone, try printing a photo from a camera roll or text from any web page over WiFi to rule out your computer as the root of the problem.
- Check to see if an error message appears; this will help you quickly find out what error your printer is experiencing and can immediately look for a solution.
- Check if you're connected to a VPN: To quickly check if you're connected to a VPN, select the Network icon on the far right of the taskbar, then check to see if the VPN connection indicates "connected."
Changing the Printer Status
If the printer shows "offline" status, then we need to change it to "online". To do this, make sure that the printer is turned on, connected to the same WiFi as our computer, and that it shows that it is connected correctly. Once this is done:
- Let's open the Windows 10 settings page.
- Go to Devices > Printers and Scanners.
- Choose our printer.
- Click on the "Open Queue" button.
- Open the Printer menu item.
- Make sure the Use offline printer option is cleared.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the printer in Windows 10
As a final setup option, if none of the previous options solved your printer problems in Windows 10, you can try removing and installing the device again. If you've never done this before and this is your first time going through this process, here are the steps you'll need to follow:
1.Open the Settings page and go to Devices > Printers and Scanners.
In section Printers and scanners, select your printer and click on the Remove device button.
The next thing we will need to do is reinstall our printer. In this case, we need to do this:
2.Open the configuration page and go to the option Devices > Printers and scanners.
Select an option Add a printer or scanner.
We wait for the system to find our printer, select it and click on Add device.
This will be a "virtual" option to reboot the device. This is also a very useful option for external devices that we connect to the computer when they fail, such as scanners, external drives, secondary monitors, etc.
Installing a printer from its application
If you recently purchased a printer, it most likely came with an appropriate app to help you set up and manage your brand. It would be nice to use it not only for everyday tasks, but also for everything related to supporting your device. Perhaps it is here, and not in the Windows menu, that you will find a solution to the problem that has arisen with your printer.
For example, if you have an HP printer or MFP, you will have access to the HP Smart app, which we can use to guide you through the installation process. All you have to do is click on the cross "+" icon in the top right corner, just below the Profile, Launch, and Notifications icon. After this, the program will search for printers connected to the PC or to the same network as our PC and tell us step by step how to install the program. We will also be able to remove printers, clear print queues, etc.
In addition, if we expand the menu of three horizontal bars, we will have access to the diagnostic and error correction tool. All we have to do is click on the Start button and a diagnostic will be run that will tell us about the printer problems and how to fix them. We also have a Help and Support section which takes us to the brand forums where we find many printer related issues and their possible solutions.
Check your Windows 10 configuration
While it is true that one of the possibilities when a printer fails is that there is a fault in the printer, another aspect that should be taken into account is the configuration of the printer itself in the operating system, in this case Windows 10. If we have updated the OS, it is possible that some parameters have been deconfigured or are incompatible with those settings, several possible solutions are recommended for this. They are as follows:
Zapusti sredstvo ustraneniya nepoladok
Windows 10 has many troubleshooting tools. Tools that allow us to automatically fix certain problems in our system. To do this, simply enter the name of the troubleshooter in the search bar on the taskbar or access it from the settings page, where we must carry out a certain process:
- Go to the Update & Security tab.
- Now click on the Troubleshoot option.
- Then Additional troubleshooting tools
- Finally, click on Printer.
We'll wait a few seconds, maybe a few minutes, not that much, this is something very specific, and Windows will accommodate you halfway in such cases. While the first editions of this tool usually didn't solve many problems, in the case of Windows 10 it has improved significantly and can be a great solution to your printing problem.
Update drivers
The next thing we can do if the printer problems continue when upgrading to Windows 10 is to check if we have updated the printer driver correctly. To do this, open the Windows 10 Device Manager, find our printer, right-click on it and select the "Update Driver" option.
In this case, it is the "update printer" option, this must be done at the software level, most likely both Microsoft and the device manufacturer have developed an update to the printer drivers that solves the printing problem after updating the operating system.
Clear and reset the Print Job Manager
Another option for solving printer problems after updating Windows 10 is to uninstall and reset the Print Job Manager. This is a file that, as the name suggests, is responsible for managing the printing process.
To remove and reset the Print Job Manager via the " tabServices", follow these steps:
- Open the Windows 10 Services application. You can type "Services" directly into the search box on the taskbar.
- Select the Standard-Local tab
- Find the Print Job Manager service in the list.
- Select Stop and then OK.
- In the search bar on the taskbar, type %WINDIR%system32spoolprinters.
- Select %WINDIR%system32spoolPRINTERS from the list of results, and then delete all files in the folder.
Then go back to the Services window and on the Standard tab, select Print Job Manager again from the list of services, select Startup, then Automatic in the Startup Type box, and finally OK.
Check the print spooler service
From services.ms file (slow method)
We should check if the print spooler service is configured correctly as this may be the reason why the printer is not working properly after the update. This tool is responsible for managing the print jobs that are sent to the printer, it can be the root of the problem and block all the print activities that we send to the device. To do this we must follow a few simple steps:
- Press the Windows key on your keyboard followed by the letter R.
- In the window that appears, enter services.msc in the field provided for this.
- Now we need to find the Print Queue in the panel that we see on the right and mark it to be able to right-click.
- After right-clicking we click on Properties.
- In the window that appears, we must go to the General tab and, where it says Startup Type, check Automatic; none of the other options are suitable.
- Then click the Apply button and immediately after that click the OK button.
- It's time to close all windows and restart your computer.
The last thing left to do is to check that after turning it on again, if the error persists or with what we just did, everything will return to normal and we will be able to print everything we need without any problems. In case the same error persists and does not allow us to print anything, we will have to continue using one of the following methods.
What should we do if we have error 0x0000011b?
One of the most common errors associated with failures in the configuration of our printer and Windows is known as error 0x0000011b. Simply put, this error occurs when a printer is configured on a network (such as at home or work) so that all computers connected to it can use it without having to physically connect to it. This error is sometimes resolved by rebooting or removing and replacing the printer cable, but if this is not the case for you, we offer you an alternative solution that should fix the situation, but if not, you will have to do one of the steps below in this list.
What we are going to do is assign a fixed IP address to the printer. This ensures that the device always has the same address, avoiding "collisions" with other devices on the same network, which often cause this type of error (especially after an update). To do this you need to do the following:
- Type the word Configuration into the Windows search engine and click on it.
- Click on devices.
- At the bottom there will be an option indicating Devices and Printers. Click there.
- In the new window we will need to go to Add a printer.
- A new window will appear where we will need to select the IP - TCP option.
It is important that we use an IP address that is not used in our router. To do this, we must enter the router's configuration menu and find the option or menu that lists the DHCP protocol. Inside the router we must also reserve the same address for the printer.
Check Windows 10 updates
Unfortunately, we've seen some Windows 10 updates cause some users to have problems printing anything from printers after installation. In other words, not only can the fact of updating from a different version of the operating system cause printing problems, other minor updates within the same version can also cause a similar problem. Additionally, nothing guarantees us that this will not happen again with future updates, so it is advisable to check if a minor update or patch was installed recently and that is when we discovered problems with our printer.
If all the above steps fail to resolve the issue, you need to check if an update has recently been installed and, if so, uninstall it and see if that resolves the error. We can then determine if this is the cause of our printing problems.
How to remove a new update
If in our case everything happened due to an update to the operating system of our computer, the truth is that we always have the option of uninstalling it. However, to do this we need to know a number of key steps that will allow us to do this. To do this, open the Windows 10 Settings page and then follow these steps:
- Go to Update and Security.
- Next, click on Windows updates.
- And finally, click on Update Log.
- In the next window we click on the "Uninstall updates" option that we find at the top and all that remains for us is to select the update that has caused problems when using the printer and proceed to remove it.
All we have to do is find this version or patch in the Installed updates window, select it and confirm the message that appears asking if we are sure we want to proceed with the removal of this update. Click Yes and wait until the process completes correctly. Once it's completed, we can try printing something and check if the problem is resolved. You can also restore to a previous point where this update did not occur, although the previous solution is the simplest and usually effective.
Prevent them from being installed again
As in this case, uninstalling cumulative updates does not prevent them from being installed again, so we need to go one step further to hide or block the ones we don't want to see in Windows Update. To do this, we need to download and run the troubleshooter under Show or hide updates from Microsoft Support. This will search for updates and from there you can choose which ones you want to hide or block from installing.
If the update does not appear there, but it should, close the program and launch it again after checking. This will not only solve the problem, but will also prevent it from happening again, as the update will be installed again, at least until a solution or new update is available.
You can also defer all updates, although this is the most efficient way since you won't miss other important updates or waste a lot of time. This problem was caused by a Windows update and may occur in the future, so it's worth knowing what to do if it happens.
