How to set a Wi-Fi password
Many users who have connected a Wi-Fi network have questions about how to password protect their wireless connection. No matter what router you use, be it D-Link, Zyxel, Asus or some other - the principle of setting a Wi-Fi password is the same for all models.
If you already have a router installed and configured
1. First, find out whether the router settings are entered correctly. If this is so, then the device will have Internet access when turned on. If the router has not been configured, you must enter all the data according to the instructions for your device, as well as the data that was provided by the provider: connection type, login, password, etc.
2. Setting a password for the Wi-Fi network should begin by entering the username and password for the router. To do this you need to run any browser on your device. In the address bar of the browser we enter the IP address of the router, as a rule, it is: 192.168.0.1.
3. Now you need to find the tab that is responsible for setting up security. To do this, go to the “manual settings” section, find the network authentication tab (it may have a different name, but the meaning is the same). When you go to this tab, the “Encryption Key” field should pop up. Here you will need to enter a combination of characters that will become your password to connect to the wireless network.
It is recommended to use a complex combination consisting of numbers and Latin letters of various registers. The password must contain at least eight characters. After entering the password, click the “Save” or “Change” button. If the operation was successful, a notification will pop up from the system that the settings have been saved. Now, when you log into a Wi-Fi network, you will be asked for a password.
The final step in the Passphrase or Key line password is set, which for reliability should consist of uppercase, capital letters and numbers, then click Ok or Apply. This completes the work, and now access to Wi-Fi can only be opened using a password.
If you just purchased a router
It should be noted that the password is not set for the network itself, but for the router. Regardless of the brand of router being connected, the principle of setting a password for a Wi-Fi network is the same for everyone.
First, the router is connected to the power supply, and according to the manufacturer's instructions supplied with it, it is configured. Insert the installation CD into the disk drive of your computer (laptop) and start setup program.
A web browser opens and the value 192.168.1.1 is entered in the address bar, allowing you to access the router settings. If access to the settings is locked with a password, then the same value is entered in the Login and Password lines - admin. Then in the router menu that opens, select the Wireless tab.
Depending on the type of router being connected, the Home or Security tab opens in the right window or left column, where you set a user password for Wi-Fi. But before you do this, you need to make a number of settings:
- check the Enabled checkbox and uncheck Auto channel (if such an item is present);
- in the Security tab or item, select the authentication type. As a rule, there are several options to choose from, but the most secure is WPA2. If the encryption type is specified, it is best to select AES.
